The Total Africa Cup of Nations hosted in Gabon (also referred to as AFCON 2017 or CAN 2017) has so far been a wonderful adventure with all 16 participating nations showcasing their class and standard.
The African Cup of Nation is the most anticipated football competition in Africa and its 31st edition hosted by Gabon isn’t killing the vibes. It’s been series of thrilling and exciting moments cooked up with surprises and upsets. the event features the best of African footballers around the world.
Emmerick Pierre Aubameyang opened the goal scoring with a wonderful finish on the opening fixtures 0n the 14th January against Guinea-Bissau before it was later cancelled out by Guinea-Bissau’s Juary on the 92min. Since then, it has been rain of goals in most games.
22 wonderful goals have been scored already in the tournament with Gabon’s Aubameyang, Senegal’s Mane and Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez leading the pack with 2 goals each.
On match day 1, all four teams in the group played out a 1-1 draw leaving widely open a chance for anyone to qualify. However, the tide changed when Cameroon defeated Guinea-Bisau [2-1] on Wednesday to move to the top spot with 4points as the host nation, Gabon, were held once again to a [1-1] draw by Burkina Faso. The next and the last games in this group will be the deciding factor to know who qualifies for the next round. Gabon[2points] faces group leader, Cameroon[4points] while Burkina Faso[2points] will play Guinea-Bisau[1point].
Group B has one of the tournaments favorite, Senegal, Zimbawe, Tunisia and Algeria. The Group’s first meetings had Algeria pitched against Zimbabwe [ended 2-2] and Tunisia against Senegal [ended 2-0 in favour of Senegal]. Yesterday, Senegal won their second game against Zimbabwe [2-0] to top Group B with 6 points. With this, Senegal becomes the first team to qualify for the quarterfinal even with one more game left to play. Their closest rival on the log is Tunisia[3points]. Tunisia also defeated Algeria [2-1] to claim the second spot. Algeria [2points] and Zimbabwe[1point] are yet to win a game in the group. The next games will pitch Algeria against Senegal and Zimbabwe against Tunisia.
Ivory coast opened their title defense with a goalless draw against Togo while DR Congo had a 1-0 victory against Morocco to sit on the top spot. In today’s encounter, Ivory coast[1point] looks to redeem their image as they take the fight to the group leader[3points], Dr Congo for the test of strength. In other fixtures, Morocco[0point] faces Togo[1point]. With one more game at hand for all sides, we are curious to know the end.
This group has been labeled the group of death. It has 3 of the toughest sides in African football [Ghana, Egypt, Mali] with Uganda not being a sweep over judging by their current form. The first encounter in this group featured Ghana in a hard fought [1-0] victory against Uganda and Mali slugging out a 0-0 draw with the Most decorated champion of the completion, Egypt. With more rounds of matches to go, this group remains a big focus. Ghana[3points] will take on Mali[1point] next while Egypt[1point] takes the battle to Africa’s National team of the year, Uganda[0point].
