Group A

On match day 1, all four teams in the group played out a 1-1 draw leaving widely open a chance for anyone to qualify. However, the tide changed when Cameroon defeated Guinea-Bisau [2-1] on Wednesday to move to the top spot with 4points as the host nation, Gabon, were held once again to a [1-1] draw by Burkina Faso. The next and the last games in this group will be the deciding factor to know who qualifies for the next round. Gabon[2points] faces group leader, Cameroon[4points] while Burkina Faso[2points] will play Guinea-Bisau[1point].

Group B

Group B has one of the tournaments favorite, Senegal, Zimbawe, Tunisia and Algeria. The Group’s first meetings had Algeria pitched against Zimbabwe [ended 2-2] and Tunisia against Senegal [ended 2-0 in favour of Senegal]. Yesterday, Senegal won their second game against Zimbabwe [2-0] to top Group B with 6 points. With this, Senegal becomes the first team to qualify for the quarterfinal even with one more game left to play. Their closest rival on the log is Tunisia[3points]. Tunisia also defeated Algeria [2-1] to claim the second spot. Algeria [2points] and Zimbabwe[1point] are yet to win a game in the group. The next games will pitch Algeria against Senegal and Zimbabwe against Tunisia.

Group C

Ivory coast opened their title defense with a goalless draw against Togo while DR Congo had a 1-0 victory against Morocco to sit on the top spot. In today’s encounter, Ivory coast[1point] looks to redeem their image as they take the fight to the group leader[3points], Dr Congo for the test of strength. In other fixtures, Morocco[0point] faces Togo[1point]. With one more game at hand for all sides, we are curious to know the end.

Group D

This group has been labeled the group of death. It has 3 of the toughest sides in African football [Ghana, Egypt, Mali] with Uganda not being a sweep over judging by their current form. The first encounter in this group featured Ghana in a hard fought [1-0] victory against Uganda and Mali slugging out a 0-0 draw with the Most decorated champion of the completion, Egypt. With more rounds of matches to go, this group remains a big focus. Ghana[3points] will take on Mali[1point] next while Egypt[1point] takes the battle to Africa’s National team of the year, Uganda[0point].
