The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) said it would enroll members of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in the health scheme to enable them have access to quality and cheaper healthcare services.
In a statement by NYSC Director of Press, Mrs Bose Aderibigbe, in Abuja on Friday, the Executive Secretary of NHIS, Prof. Usman Yusuf, disclosed this during a visit to the NYSC Director- General, Brig.- Gen. Sule Kazaure.
Explaining how this package will be unleashed and managed, Prof. Yusuf revealed that NHIS officials would, at the start of the NYSC orientation exercises, head straight to all camps across the country to capture biometric data and information of corps members.
“As the corps members get posted to places of primary assignment, the NHIS would assign each of them to a hospital where they will be getting treatment in the event of illness.
“We have made a proposal to government to enable it make direct payment to hospitals that will render healthcare services to corps members instead of doing so through Health Maintenance Organisations (HMOs).
“This will avoid hitches often occasioned by failure of some HMOs to make appropriate payments to hospitals,”. he said.
Prof. Yusuf explained that the decision to enroll the corps members in the scheme was in compliance with a Presidential directive to NHIS authorities. Yusuf, the statement said, disclosed that the scheme had received a directive to find evolving measures that would enhance access to qualitative healthcare for corps members.
It stated that the Executive Secretary also announced plans to deploy corps members posted to the NHIS for primary assignment to its desk offices that would be established in all hospitals nationwide.
The desk officers who would have direct access to him will be made to always give reports on cases of neglect and ill-treatment by hospitals and agencies in charge.
The NYSC Director-General welcomed and lauded the initiative. He further stated in his response that NYSC management was already nursing similar idea to advance the welfare policy of the scheme.
The NHIS scheme was established under the National Health Insurance Scheme Act, Cap N42, laws of the Federation of Nigeria in 200. The scheme is aimed at providing easy access to healthcare service for all Nigerians in an affordable price via prepayment method. It is our own version of the ObamaCare.
